This month, we're talking with Julian Kozulin, Investment Manager at OMD, to discuss his experience working in the media industry and what he loves about OOH.
How long have you been in your current role?
It's been nine months and I've enjoyed every day at OMD so far.
What made you want to enter the advertising industry?
I studied marketing at university and always enjoyed it. I got into the media industry through someone I had previously worked for and my experience working in their agency opened up a whole new world to me. Like most people in media I sort of fell into it and haven’t looked back since.
What does a typical day look like for you?
As the old adage goes, no two days in media are the same. As an investment manager, a lot of time is spent learning and optimizing our media practices, whether it be internal processes or improvements in our buying. The team on Smith St is pretty big so there’s a lot of time spent working with members of my team and other departments. There’s always something happening on the Coles account so I’m always kept on my toes.
What do you love about working in media?
I love the people and the culture. This is something that I spoke about when I went to my alma mater, Swinburne, to speak to advertising students about my career journey. You get to meet and work with plenty of amazing people and it's a fun industry to be part of.
What makes OOH unique?
I’ve got a massive soft spot for OOH. After spending 2 years at QMS, I have seen the variety of ways the channel can be used within a media campaign. Most regard it as an upper funnel or awareness asset but it can be a lot more tactical and be a key player in the consumer journey. With the wide array of assets and data tools available, I truly believe it is the Swisse Army knife equivalent of media channels.
Proudest achievement in your career so far?
There are a couple of campaigns I’ve had the pleasure to work on but not one that stands out above the rest. I’m still on the hunt for something to hang my hat on so I’ll continue to show up the best that I can and see what happens.
Fun fact about you not many people know?
I can speak 2 languages.
What are your goals for the next 12 months?
I’m keen to continue rounding out my skill set, with TV/BVOD/SVOD being my current focus, before moving on to below-the-line media.
What is your favourite OOH campaign?
One that comes to mind was a Nike campaign that I did an assignment on in uni. It was more of a guerrilla marketing OOH campaign where Nike removed the seat from park benches and left their logo on with ‘Run’ written on the bench. I think it’s an incredible way to show up in people’s habitual environments and challenge them!
